Scooters: the volume business

The Honda Activa at Rs.78,166 is the single most recognisable two-wheeler in India and the default recommendation for a family scooter. The Honda Dio at Rs.74,298 is the sportier-styled sibling on the same 109.51cc platform, aimed at younger riders.

Stepping up, the Activa 125 at Rs.92,529 and Dio 125 at Rs.93,289 add meaningful mid-range pull for pillion duty. The 125cc versions are worth the difference if you regularly carry someone.

Commuter motorcycles

The Honda Shine 100 at Rs.65,717 is the entry point, and the 123.94cc Honda Shine at Rs.82,449 is the volume model — a byword for smooth running in the 125cc class. The Honda Livo at Rs.80,752 and Honda SP 125 at Rs.89,406 fill out the range, the SP 125 adding a fuel-injected engine and better instrumentation.

For a larger commuter, the Honda Unicorn at Rs.1.14 lakh remains a long-standing choice for unfussy 162cc riding.

The premium range

Above roughly Rs.2 lakh, Honda's bikes are sold through a separate dealership network with fewer outlets. The line-up runs through mid-capacity machines up to Rs.16.02 lakh, covering adventure, cruiser and sport categories.

If you are considering one of these, check where your nearest premium dealership actually is. Servicing a large Honda is straightforward in a metro and considerably less convenient outside one, which is a very different ownership experience from running an Activa.

What Honda is known for

Engine refinement is the consistent theme. Honda commuters and scooters are generally quieter and smoother than rivals at the same price, which matters more in daily use than a small difference in peak power. Build quality and paint finish tend to hold up well over years of use.

The trade-offs are that Honda rarely competes on outright price at the entry end, and the equipment list on base variants can lag rivals. Buyers are effectively paying a small premium for refinement and resale confidence.

A note on mileage

Only one Honda model in this catalogue carries a published ARAI mileage figure, so there is no meaningful brand average to quote here. Check the individual bike page for the model you are considering, and treat any ARAI number as a way to rank models rather than a prediction of real-world economy.

In practice, Honda's 110cc scooters and 125cc commuters sit in the same broad efficiency band as their direct rivals from Hero, TVS and Bajaj. Differences of two or three kmpl between competing models are rarely the deciding factor once servicing costs and resale value are taken into account.
