Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom — Overview
The Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom was discontinued in India in April 2021, but its 1202cc Evolution V-twin still powers dozens of used examples available across the country at Rs 5-8 lakh. The Sportster is one of the longest-running motorcycle nameplates in history, and the 1200 Custom's air-cooled 45-degree V-twin - with its mechanical heartbeat at idle, its wall of torque at 2,500 rpm, and its distinctly American soundtrack - remains something that no parallel twin or liquid-cooled inline engine replicates at any price. If the authentic Harley experience is what you want, the used 1200 Custom is the most accessible entry point in the segment. The last known new price in Delhi was Rs 10.83 lakh ex-showroom; on the used market in 2026, a 2019-2021 example in good condition typically trades between Rs 6.5 and Rs 8 lakh.
What We Like
- Evolution V-twin character on the used market: The 1202cc air-cooled V-twin's low-rpm torque pulse, the mechanical heartbeat at idle, and the distinctly American soundtrack define the ownership experience in a way that no modern parallel twin replicates. At Rs 5-8 lakh on the used market, this character is exceptional value.
- 725 mm seat height - most accessible in the Harley range: The Sportster's narrower frame and lower centre of gravity mean that riders between 5'4" and 5'9" can flat-foot the 1200 Custom in a way they cannot the Fat Boy or Street Bob. Slow-speed manoeuvrability is substantially easier than the 268 kg kerb weight suggests.
- Deepest aftermarket ecosystem of any motorcycle: Five decades of Sportster parts availability - both official Harley-Davidson accessories and global aftermarket - mean handlebars, exhausts, seats, footpegs, and engine components are globally sourced and universally compatible with XL1200C models from 2004 onwards. Used buyers inherit a bike that can be endlessly personalised.
- Dual-channel ABS standard on the BS6 variant: When Harley-Davidson launched the BS6 1200 Custom in March 2020 at Rs 10.77 lakh, dual-channel ABS was standard - a genuinely modern safety feature at that price point in the cruiser segment.
What Could Be Better
- 268 kg with 68 HP is the segment's worst power-to-weight: The Triumph Bonneville Bobber makes 78 bhp at 169 kg. The Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 makes 47 PS at 241 kg. The 1200 Custom's 268 kg means city riding, parking, and slow-speed manoeuvring require consistent physical effort, and the V-twin's torque is largely spent moving the motorcycle rather than accelerating it.
- Air-cooled engine heat in Indian city traffic: In Bangalore, Delhi, or Hyderabad summer traffic, heat soak from the 1202cc air-cooled V-twin radiates toward the rider's legs at low speeds. This is a real discomfort in slow-moving city traffic that liquid-cooled alternatives do not impose.
- Post-discontinuation service access outside metros: Harley-Davidson India's distribution shifted to Hero MotoCorp in October 2020, and the 1200 Custom was discontinued in April 2021. Genuine parts availability through the Hero network is uneven outside the eight major cities - used buyers in tier-2 cities depend on independent mechanics and imported parts.
Editor's Verdict
Should You Buy the Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom?
The 1200 Custom makes its strongest case as a used buy at Rs 5-8 lakh - where the Evolution V-twin's character, the 725 mm seat height, and the global aftermarket ecosystem represent exceptional value against anything in this price band. At its last new price of Rs 10.83 lakh, the value argument against the Triumph Bonneville Bobber was harder to sustain. For used buyers who want the authentic Harley experience without the premium of newer models, the 1200 Custom remains a compelling choice - provided you are in or near a city with access to a Hero MotoCorp authorised service point.
