Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom: Latest News

April 28, 2021 - Harley-Davidson 1200 Custom discontinued in India

Harley-Davidson India officially discontinued the 1200 Custom (Sportster XL1200C) as part of the portfolio rationalisation following Harley-Davidson's exit from Indian manufacturing operations. The company had announced in October 2020 that it would cease local assembly in India and enter a distribution partnership with Hero MotoCorp. The 1200 Custom, along with several other Sportster models, was not carried forward in the revised Hero-distributed portfolio.

October 2020 - Hero MotoCorp takes over Harley-Davidson India distribution

Harley-Davidson and Hero MotoCorp signed a long-term distribution and manufacturing agreement in October 2020. Under this arrangement, Hero MotoCorp handles sales, marketing, and service of select Harley-Davidson models in India. The partnership brought the Pan America 1250, Nightster, and Street Glide to India via Hero's retail network, but excluded the Sportster 1200 Custom and other entry-level models.

Current service situation (2026):

Harley-Davidson India's authorised service is now available through Hero MotoCorp's premium outlets in eight major cities. Genuine Harley-Davidson parts for the 1200 Custom (Evolution V-twin components, electrical, brake, and suspension parts) are available through these centres and via authorised importers. For 1200 Custom owners in tier-2 cities, independent mechanics with Harley-Davidson experience are available in most large cities; the Evolution engine's mechanical simplicity (pushrod, air-cooled, conventional carb/EFI) means competent independent servicing is more viable than for complex electronics-heavy bikes.

There is no announcement of the Sportster 1200 Custom returning to the Indian market.

For owners and prospective used buyers: the 1200 Custom's parts supply situation is stable for fundamental mechanical components but variable for cosmetic items like chrome trim, seat covers, and badges. Genuine Harley-Davidson accessories ordered through Hero outlets can take 2-4 weeks for non-stocked items. The global Harley-Davidson aftermarket (J&P Cycles, RevZilla, Zodiac) ships to India; customs duties apply but the parts cost is often comparable to or lower than dealer pricing for non-critical components.
