The X440: Harley at Indian prices

The Harley-Davidson X440 at Rs.2.35 lakh and X440 T at Rs.2.79 lakh are the brand's entry into the mainstream Indian market. At 440cc they compete with the Royal Enfield 350s and Hero Mavrick 440 rather than with anything else wearing a Harley badge.

These are the only two Harleys most buyers will realistically consider. They are also the only ones supported by a broader dealer and service arrangement rather than the specialist premium network.

The imported big twins

Above the X440 pair there is a very large gap. The Nightster at Rs.14.54 lakh is the cheapest imported model, followed by the Sportster S at Rs.18.05 lakh and Street Bob at Rs.20.23 lakh.

These are 975cc to 1923cc cruisers — heavy, torque-rich machines built for straight-line highway riding. They are not casual purchases, and they are not practical in dense city traffic. Kerb weight alone rules them out for many riders, so sit on one before committing.

Half the listing is discontinued

Ten of the 21 Harley-Davidson models here are no longer in production, a higher proportion than any other brand on this site. That reflects a substantial reshaping of the Indian line-up over recent years.

If you are shopping new, confirm the model is still available before visiting a dealer. If you are buying used, the discontinued models can represent good value, but check parts availability first — these were low-volume machines in India and specific components can take time to source.

Running costs

Fifteen Harley models carry a published ARAI figure, averaging about 20 kmpl. On the big twins, fuel is the least of the costs. Tyres are expensive and wear according to weight and torque, insurance scales with a Rs.20 lakh-plus valuation, and servicing must be done at an authorised dealer to preserve warranty cover.

The X440 pair is a different proposition entirely, with running costs closer to a Royal Enfield than to a Sportster.

Service network

Harley-Davidson operates from a limited number of dealerships concentrated in major metros. For the imported models this is a genuine consideration: parts come from abroad, lead times can run to weeks, and there is no local mechanic alternative. Confirm where your nearest authorised workshop is before buying.

Who these bikes suit

The X440 pair makes sense for anyone cross-shopping a Royal Enfield 350 who wants a different badge and a slightly larger engine. The imported twins are for riders who specifically want a big American cruiser and have both the budget and the dealer access to support one. There is no middle ground in this range, and no practical commuter option at any price.
