Why choose a geared motorcycle

Three practical advantages over an automatic scooter. Fuel economy is better at the same displacement, because a gearbox keeps the engine closer to its efficient range than a CVT can. Stability at sustained speed is higher, thanks to larger wheels, a longer wheelbase and more weight over the front. And rough-road ability is significantly better, with more suspension travel and greater ground clearance.

The trade-off is that gear changes and clutch work make dense stop-start traffic more tiring, and there is no underseat storage. For riders whose journeys are short city hops, an automatic is genuinely the easier tool.

Where to start in a category this size

At the entry end, the Hero HF Deluxe at Rs.58,646, TVS Sport at Rs.63,501 and Honda Shine 100 at Rs.65,717 are the cheapest geared motorcycles available. These are 97cc to 110cc commuters built for economy above all else.

How many gears, and does it matter?

Most Indian commuters use four or five speeds; larger motorcycles almost universally use six. More gears generally means more relaxed highway cruising, because the top ratio can be taller without hurting acceleration.

What matters more in daily use is where the torque sits. A commuter tuned for low-end pull will feel easier in traffic than a higher-revving engine with the same peak power, regardless of gear count. That is why a test ride tells you far more than a spec comparison.
