Matter AERA — Overview
India finally has an electric motorcycle with a gear lever and clutch - and it works exactly like you'd expect, minus the engine noise. The Matter AERA, priced from Rs 1,83,308 ex-showroom, is the country's first production EV bike with a 4-speed manual Hypershift Gearbox. Backed by a 5 kWh liquid-cooled battery, it claims 172 km on a single charge (125 km ARAI), hits 105 km/h flat out, and does 0-60 km/h in under six seconds. The feature list is startling for the price: a 7-inch TFT touchscreen, 4G eSIM with navigation, park assist, reverse mode, and OTA updates, backed by a 15-year battery warranty. Deliveries finally began in October 2024 after a year of delays, and two years on, most owners agree - despite the gearbox's occasional clunkiness - that the AERA is unlike anything else on Indian roads.
What We Like
- India's first 4-speed manual gearbox on an EV - shifts like a real bike, feels like a real bike, just without the noise or fuel bills
- Exceptional tech at under Rs 2 lakh - 7-inch TFT, 4G eSIM, GPS navigation, keyless start, park assist, reverse mode, OTA updates. No ICE motorcycle near this price comes close
- Genuinely quick for the segment - 0-60 km/h in around 6 seconds, stable and balanced handling with proper motorcycle proportions and road presence
- A 15-year/1.5 lakh km battery warranty and 3-year vehicle warranty give real peace of mind on long-term ownership - rare for a young EV startup
What Could Be Better
- Gearbox can feel clunky - riders report gear-shift noise and a shifting feel that's neither as seamless as a typical EV nor as satisfying as a proper ICE gearbox
- Real-world range regularly falls short of the claimed 172 km, with owners reporting closer to 100-125 km depending on riding mode, load, and terrain
- Some owners report water ingress into the battery unit during heavy rain and inconsistent after-sales response outside major metros - a young brand's service network is still maturing
Editor's Verdict
Should You Buy the Matter AERA?
The Matter AERA is a properly bold product - the Hypershift Gearbox is a real engineering achievement, and no other electric motorcycle in India under Rs 2 lakh offers this level of tech, backed by a genuinely generous 15-year battery warranty. The gearbox quirks, range shortfall versus claims, and patchy service coverage outside metros are real concerns. Buy it if you're in a metro with a nearby dealership and want an EV that actually feels like riding a motorcycle - otherwise, weigh the service network in your city carefully before committing.
