Kawasaki Ninja 400 Full Specifications & Technical Details
The Kawasaki Ninja 400's engine is where the story starts: a 399cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin with DOHC eight-valve architecture and a 180-degree firing order that gives it a linear, addictive power delivery. Maximum power is 44.7 bhp at 10,000 rpm - the engine pulls cleanly from 3,000 rpm and surges with intent above 7,000 rpm on an open highway. Torque peaks at 37 Nm at 8,000 rpm, transmitted through a six-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch fitted as standard on every unit.
The lightweight trellis frame - conceptually inspired by the Ninja H2 - is central to the Ninja 400's biggest advantage: a kerb weight of just 168 kg. That is lighter than many 150cc bikes and dramatically below the competition in the 400cc class. Combined with a 1,370 mm wheelbase and 140 mm ground clearance, the chassis feels neutral and forgiving - easy to place accurately in corners, composed over mid-corner bumps.
Suspension is a 41mm telescopic front fork and a horizontal back-link monoshock at the rear. Both are non-adjustable but well-calibrated for the bike's weight and intended use. Braking is via a 286 mm front petal disc with a radial-mount caliper and a 193 mm rear petal disc, governed by dual-channel ABS. The ABS calibration is notably progressive - it intervenes late enough to feel like a safety net rather than a constant intrusion.
Tyres are 110/70-R17 front and 150/60-R17 rear - both radials - which keeps unsprung weight low and provides confident wet-weather traction in urban conditions. Fuel efficiency is ARAI-rated at 26.7 kmpl; with a 14 L tank that gives a theoretical range of roughly 370 km per fill. Seat height is 785 mm, accessible for most Indian riders without tiptoeing.

In segment context, the Ninja 400's specifications hold up well. Its 168 kg kerb weight undercuts the Yamaha R3 (169 kg) and significantly beats the KTM RC 390 (172 kg). The parallel-twin produces a clear torque advantage over single-cylinder rivals in the real-world mid-range - the bandwidth where daily riding and overtaking actually happen. The one area where numbers disappoint is the instrument cluster: an analogue tachometer with a small digital inset, compared to the Aprilia RS 457's 5-inch TFT and KTM RC 390's colour TFT. The hardware is exceptional; the information display is not.
