The biggest news in the Vespa SXL 125's story is also its last chapter: Piaggio India discontinued the SXL 125 in March 2025, pulling it from showrooms alongside the VXL 125. The move ended more than a decade of the Vespa 125 range in India as Piaggio rethinks its positioning in the subcontinent.
The SXL 125 went through two significant generations. The original launch brought the classic design and a carburetted 125cc engine to India - at a time when no other scooter offered Italian heritage at that price point. The BS6 update in 2020 brought fuel injection, revised emissions compliance, and a slight power bump, while prices jumped from around Rs 93,000 to Rs 1,15,000+.
The Racing Sixties limited edition was added to the BS6 range as a premium collector variant, referencing Vespa's motorsport history from the 1960s with unique graphics and a numbered badge.

Piaggio India launched the Vespa Tech 80th Special Edition in April 2026 to celebrate Vespa's 80th anniversary, available in 125cc and 150cc. The limited-edition scooter features an exclusive Verde Pastello green inspired by the original 1946 Vespa, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and commemorative 80th-anniversary badging - no mechanical changes from the standard lineup.
Updated Vespa 125cc and 150cc models were unveiled internationally in March 2026, featuring a major safety upgrade: a 220mm rear disc brake with dual-piston caliper replacing the previous drum, plus new 12-inch alloy wheels and a fully digital LCD instrument cluster. Piaggio has not confirmed an India launch timeline.

Piaggio India launched the completely refreshed 2025 Vespa 125 lineup on February 25, 2025, replacing the SXL 125 and VXL 125 names entirely. The new range - Vespa 125 (Rs 1.32L), Vespa S 125 (Rs 1.36L), Vespa Tech 125 (Rs 1.92L), and Vespa S Tech 125 (Rs 1.96L) - brings a mild power bump to 9.5 bhp/10.1 Nm and introduces keyless ignition plus a 5-inch TFT with Bluetooth on the Tech variants.
With the February 2025 lineup restructure, Piaggio India formally retired the Vespa SXL 125 and VXL 125 model names. The Vespa S 125 (Rs 1.36 Lakh ex-showroom) is the direct successor - same monocoque body and 124.45cc engine family, updated power output and variant structure.
Piaggio India offered year-end discounts on Vespa and Aprilia scooters in December 2024, with benefits reported on the SXL 125 and VXL 125 before their lineup replacement in early 2025.
For existing owners, discontinuation primarily affects long-term spare parts availability. Piaggio India is obligated to maintain parts supply for a statutory period post-discontinuation, but owners in cities without an authorised Piaggio centre should stock critical consumables - brake pads, drive belt, air filter - while availability remains good.
No announced replacement for the SXL 125 has come from Piaggio India. Buyers who were considering the SXL 125 are now looking at the Aprilia SR 125 - also from the Piaggio Group - as the closest Italian-heritage alternative in the premium 125cc scooter segment.
