Vespa SXL 125 — Overview
Italian scooters have always carried a premium in India, and the Vespa SXL 125 made no apologies for it. Launched as the sportier sibling of the VXL 125, the SXL wore wider rear-set footpegs, a sportier stance, and that classic pressed-steel monocoque body that has defined Italian streets since 1946. At a last recorded ex-showroom price of Rs 1.35-1.41 Lakh (BS6), it was the most expensive 125cc scooter in its segment - until Piaggio pulled the plug in March 2025. What you get is a 124.45cc CVT scooter with 9.77 PS, a 200mm front disc, LED headlight with DRLs, and 55 kmpl ARAI mileage (real-world closer to 40-47 kmpl). What you also get, if you're buying pre-owned or using an existing one, is a scooter that demands a nearby Piaggio service centre and a budget for premium spare parts.
Vespa SXL 125 Latest Updates
View allPiaggio India launched the Vespa Tech 80th Special Edition in April 2026 to celebrate Vespa's 80th anniversary, available in 125cc and 150cc. The limited-edition scooter features an exclusive Verde Pastello green inspired by the original 1946 Vespa, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and commemorative 80th-anniversary badging - no mechanical changes from the standard lineup.
Updated Vespa 125cc and 150cc models were unveiled internationally in March 2026, featuring a major safety upgrade: a 220mm rear disc brake with dual-piston caliper replacing the previous drum, plus new 12-inch alloy wheels and a fully digital LCD instrument cluster. Piaggio has not confirmed an India launch timeline.
Piaggio India discontinued the Vespa SXL 125 in March 2025, pulling it from dealerships alongside the VXL 125. The move ended over a decade of the Vespa 125 range in India as Piaggio rationalises its lineup.
What We Like
- Premium Italian design - the monocoque steel body and retro styling are genuinely head-turning on Indian roads
- Smooth, comfortable ride with a well-cushioned seat, upright handlebar, and well-tuned CVT for city commuting
- Strong 200mm front disc brake - confidence-inspiring in heavy traffic, a genuine step up from rivals with drum-only setups
- Full-LED headlight with DRLs offers excellent night visibility compared to most 125cc competitors
What Could Be Better
- Service network is very thin - authorised Piaggio centres are limited outside metros, and spare parts can take weeks to arrive
- Real-world mileage of 40-47 kmpl falls well short of the claimed 55 kmpl ARAI figure
- High ownership costs - spare parts and servicing are expensive compared to Japanese and Indian rivals at this price
Editor's Verdict
Should You Buy the Vespa SXL 125?
The Vespa SXL 125 is a scooter you buy with your heart, not a spreadsheet. The Italian design, monocoque body, and smooth ride are genuinely special in a sea of plastic-panel commuters - but the thin service network and premium ownership costs make it a liability outside major cities. With discontinuation in March 2025, long-term parts availability is now a real concern. If you live close to an authorised Piaggio dealer and can stomach higher maintenance bills, it remains one of the most characterful 125cc scooters ever sold in India.
