R nineT Specifications

The BMW R nineT is built around a 1,170cc air and oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine - the flat-twin configuration where cylinders protrude horizontally on either side of the motorcycle rather than upright or forward. This layout gives the R nineT its distinctive silhouette, its low centre of gravity, and the lateral engine oscillation at idle that owners describe as a physical connection to the machine. Peak power is 109 PS at 7,250 rpm, with torque peaking at 116 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The torque figure is generous for city riding - the engine pulls from low revs without demanding frequent gear changes.

Transmission is a six-speed manual with shaft drive replacing the chain drive common on most motorcycles at this price. Shaft drive eliminates chain maintenance - no cleaning, no tensioning, no replacement. It also delivers smoother power application at highway speeds with less drivetrain lurch than a chain. The trade-off is a small amount of additional unsprung weight and a slightly different feel under throttle application.

Suspension is fully adjustable USD (upside-down) 46mm front forks - track-specification hardware that provides precise feedback and is adjustable for compression and rebound. The rear uses a cast aluminium swingarm with a monoshock adjustable for spring preload. Braking is handled by twin 320mm front discs with radially-mounted four-piston Brembo calipers and a 265mm rear disc, all managed by dual-channel ABS.

The four-part frame is the R nineT's most architecturally notable feature - a tubular steel structure designed specifically to facilitate customisation. The rear subframe is detachable, allowing a complete replacement with a café racer loop, scrambler high-mount, or any of hundreds of aftermarket options. The engine is a stressed member of the chassis, exposed on both sides, with no panels hiding the mechanical hardware. BMW designed the R nineT to look exactly like what it is.

Kerb weight is 221 kg. Seat height is 805 mm - relatively accessible for the displacement class. Fuel tank capacity is 18 litres, giving a practical range of approximately 290-320 km in mixed riding at the ARAI figure of 19.6 kmpl.
