Vespa VXL 125 — Overview
At a time when every 125cc scooter comes dressed in polypropylene and promises 50+ kmpl, the Vespa VXL 125 arrived wearing a full-steel monocoque body and Italian design DNA - and refused to apologise for costing more. For buyers who wanted style over spreadsheet logic, it was the answer.
The VXL 125 packs a 124.45cc, fuel-injected engine producing 9.77 PS and 10.11 Nm, delivering 45 kmpl ARAI mileage. It sits on a 770mm seat, weighs 115 kg, and stops via a 200mm front disc - all wrapped in a silhouette that owes more to 1960s Rome than modern Indian scooter design. Priced at Rs 1,30,951 for the STD variant, it was always the most expensive 125cc scooter in its class.
Honest caveat upfront: the VXL 125 was discontinued in March 2025. Parts are already getting harder to find outside metro areas, service centres were never Vespa's strong suit, and no variant gets ABS. If those factors matter, look at the new Vespa 125 line-up (which replaced it) or the TVS Ntorq 125. But if you have a dealer nearby and appreciate a scooter that turns heads on NH44 and in Bandra traffic alike, the VXL 125 - new or used - remains one of the most characterful machines in the 125cc segment.

Available in 125cc and 150cc versions, it features an exclusive matte metallic Blue Officina 8 finish with brass and aluminium accents, honouring Piaggio's heritage experimental department - the birthplace of the original Vespa.
The Vespa VXL 125 was officially discontinued in India on March 31, 2025. Piaggio India ended production of the entire VXL and SXL line-up, which had been in the Indian market since 2017, with the BS6 version having launched in August 2020.
What We Like
- Full-metal monocoque body with Italian retro styling that stands out immediately in the 125cc segment - owners report admiring glances years after purchase
- Refined, fuel-injected engine with a distinctive exhaust note; real-world mileage of 38-45 kmpl depending on riding conditions
- 200mm front disc brakes provide confident, responsive stopping power - rare in this price band
- Agile and light-feeling in city traffic despite the all-steel construction
What Could Be Better
- Service centres scarce outside major cities - the most consistently cited complaint across owner reviews
- No ABS on any variant, and spare parts are expensive and available only at authorised dealers
- Discontinued as of March 2025 - long-term spares availability and resale value are real concerns
Editor's Verdict
Should You Buy the Vespa VXL 125?
The Vespa VXL 125 is a scooter you buy with your heart, not a spreadsheet. It looks and sounds like nothing else in the 125cc segment, and its full-metal build inspires genuine confidence. But it demands proximity to an authorised service centre and the patience to pay premium prices for parts. Now discontinued, it is a harder sell for practical commuters - though for Vespa loyalists in metro cities, it remains a rewarding, characterful choice in the used market.
