The Harley-Davidson Sportster S is built around the Revolution Max 1252T - a 1252cc, liquid-cooled, 60-degree V-twin with variable valve timing that represents a complete break from Harley's air-cooled legacy. The engine produces 121 PS at 7500 rpm and 125 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm, making it one of the most powerful cruisers in the Indian market under Rs 20 lakh.
The chassis is all-new too. Up front, 43mm fully adjustable inverted forks give you control over compression and rebound damping - something you'll want to tweak if you're dealing with Indian roads. At the rear, a piggyback monoshock with preload and rebound adjustment does the same job. The front wheel rides on a fat 160/70R17 tyre, giving the bike its distinctive wide-stance look, while the rear runs a 180/70R16.
Braking is where the Sportster S genuinely impresses. Harley fitted a 4-piston Brembo caliper on the 320mm front disc - the same supplier used by Ducati and Aprilia at this segment - and backed it up with a single-piston rear caliper on a 260mm disc. Dual-channel ABS with cornering capability (C-ABS) and cornering traction control (C-TCS) round out the safety electronics.
The 6-speed transmission uses a belt final drive - traditional for Harley, smooth on the road, and low on maintenance. A slipper clutch is standard, making downshifts smoother under braking. Fuel capacity is 11.8 litres, which at 20 kmpl ARAI (expect 17-18 kmpl in the real world) gives you roughly 200-210 km per fill on highways.
At 228 kg kerb weight and a 765mm seat height, the Sportster S sits on the heavier side for its segment. Riders under 5'5" may have to stretch for a flat-foot at stops.
